Special Features

Once called "the best kept secret on Port Road', Kilkenny Primary School has many unique and special features.

Our Outdoor Areas

We have a native "Scrub" area which serves as an outdoor learning space and play area. This includes natural play equipment, loose-parts play, cubby building, a firepit, pond and new Bush Tucker Trail (Mikawomma Walk). This will be further developed through our Reconciliation Action Plan work, collaborating with Aboriginal community members, students and the Botanic Gardens specialists.

Also in our outdoor areas we have our "Groundsplash" play space, Award-winning Garden areas (including greenhouse, garden and orchard), outdoor deck, sandpit with water play, sensory play areas, 2 ovals, 2 playgrounds and an outdoor basketball court.

Our Specialist Programs

We are a proud Stephanie Alexander Kitchen / Garden Program site. In 2010, we were one of the first schools in South Australia to establish this program, and recently, won a World Environment Day Award from the United Nations for our sustained commitment to this program.

As part of this program, we have Kitchen specialists - Jess Liebich (winner of My Kitchen Rules), and Josie Blain who create recipes from around the world, introducing students (and staff and volunteers) to new techniques and flavours. Each class participates in weekly classes for half of the year.

Supporting this program is our Garden specialist, Emma Robertson. Emma hosts Garden lessons with classes, with a 'hero' ingredient matching what is being cooked in Kitchen classes that week. Students are involved in planting, watering, maintaining and harvesting for a full 'farm to plate' experience.

Each year we enter several competitions through the Royal Adelaide Show, providing students with additional opportunities in these extra-curriculum areas.
