Blue Room
At Kilkenny, we believe that every child should feel safe, calm and ready to learn. To support this, we have created our Blue Room – a dedicated interoception and sensory space where students can regulate their emotions, practise self-awareness and develop strategies for wellbeing.
What is interoception?
Interoception is our ability to notice and understand signals from inside our body, such as feeling hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, tired or upset. When children learn to recognise these signals, they are better able to respond in healthy and positive ways.
How the Blue Room helps
The Blue Room is a calm, supportive environment designed to help students:
- Notice and identify how their body feels.
- Practise strategies to regulate their emotions.
- Develop self-management skills they can use in the classroom and beyond.
- Take a short, structured break so they can return to learning feeling settled and focused.
What’s inside?
The space is equipped with sensory tools, calming activities and visual supports that encourage children to explore their emotions and practise regulation strategies. Staff are trained to guide students through interoception activities that build resilience and confidence.
Why it matters
By giving children the opportunity to understand and manage their emotions, the Blue Room helps to reduce stress, improve focus and support positive relationships. It’s one of the ways we nurture the wellbeing of every learner at Kilkenny.
