Read Write Inc
At Kilkenny Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) program to give our students the strongest possible start in reading, writing and spelling. RWI is a structured, systematic phonics approach developed by Ruth Miskin that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently, while also developing a love of books.
How it works
- Children are taught in small, carefully matched groups so they can learn at the right pace.
- They are introduced to sounds (phonemes) and the letters that represent them (graphemes) in a clear sequence.
- Through daily lessons, children practise blending sounds to read words and segmenting words to support spelling.
- Each new skill is applied straight away in reading books that are carefully matched to the sounds children have learned.
Why we use it
- It ensures every child makes rapid progress, building confidence as well as accuracy.
- Reading becomes enjoyable because children experience success quickly.
- It supports children in developing not only decoding skills but also comprehension, fluency and expression.
Supporting your child at home
Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting early reading. You can help by:
- Reading aloud to your child regularly to build vocabulary and enjoyment.
- Practising “Fred Talk” (sounding out words) together.
