Student Agency

At Kilkenny students are at the centre of all we do. As a school we work with students, giving them the ability and the will to take action, to positively influence their own lives and the world around them. Our students play an active role in grounds development, leading school teams, helping shape learning programs, developing strategies to create a culture of belonging and inclusion, and showcasing our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program to a national audience. Decisions are rarely made at our school without student input. Our teachers are skilled in involving students in the learning process, building their sense of autonomy and independence, and developing their ability to work collaboratively to solve problems.

House Leaders – Oversee and prepare for our Summer and Winter Sportsdays. Support house sports, and represent our school at official functions, and with school tours. Sixteen Leaders are selected each year, four per house.

Kilkenny ChangeMakers – Each year a small group of students are given the opportunity to explore an improvement area and develop strategies that will support learning and wellbeing across the school. Previous focus areas have explored effective teacher feedback, peer to peer feedback, goal setting, data analysis; and in 2025, bringing our new school values to life.

Stephanie Alexander Program – Students are involved in the paddock to plate process of cooking, supporting the growing of produce and learning the skills of the cooking and presentation of foods. In 2025 we have undertaken a whole school project to build a Bush Tucker Trail, to recognise the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples uses of bush food and medicine using native produce.

ICT Young explorers – Students involved in the Young ICT Explorers work in small teams to design and develop digital solutions to problems that matter to them. The competition gives them the chance to lead, make decisions, and share creative ideas while building confidence in coding, collaboration, and presenting to real-world judges. In 2024, Kilkenny Primary students proudly achieved success at both the state and national levels.
